Gwendy’s Button Box is Stephen King’s most recent novella, written together with Richard Chizmar, and it is set in the little town of Castle Rock, Maine. Little Gwendy entertains herself in the summer of 1974 by climbing the stairs up to Castle View, ominously called the “Suicide Stairs”, which are held by rusty iron bolts and embrace the steep contours of the cliffside. From above Castle Rock, she listens to the sounds of children on the playground until a stranger with a black hat invites her to “palaver“. She did not know it then that a time will come when her nightmares would spin around that hat.
