UNESCO designated Athens as the next World Books Capital. The city is committed to promoting books and reading via a range of activities over the span of one year, starting on April 23rd, when the World Book Day is celebrated.
The city will organize meetings with writers, illustrators, translators, concerts, exhibitions, poetry readings and various themed workshops. More specifically, in 2018 the initiative will focus on making books and reading more easily accessible to all categories of people, including refugees.
“UNESCO’s decision is an honor. It reflects Athens’ international appeal and enhances our strategic pursuit to turn our city into a modern cultural destination”.
Athens Mayor Giorgos Kamminis
